Allowing root SSH access to ESX host

By default root does not have SSH access to an ESX host. To alter the server so that you can connect remotely with root do the following:

On the ESX server open the service console

Edit the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file by issuing the following command

vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config

Scroll down until you find the line ‘PermitRootLogin no‘ and then alter the no to a yes.

Escape from INSERT mode back to COMMAND mode by pressing

ESC

Now save the file by typing

:w

and then quit the editor by typing

:q!

I use virtual machines a lot. I also like to listen to music through my headphones a lot as well.

Therein lies a conflict, namely system beeps which are so stupidly loud that the people around me must think I have been shot by my reaction!

The solution…. disable the system beep on the virtual machine, to do so run the following at a command prompt:

sc config beep start= disabled

The result…. no more beeps and no more bleeding eardrums. Now all I have to do is to remember to run the command on my base OS templates and I will be in heaven

Outputting Powershell to HTML

Well I came across this information relating to converting the standard powershell console window to HTML. Might be useful for putting information into a webpage or sharepoint.

This script will get users from AD who are in the sales department:

get-user -filter “department -like ‘Sales’”

To do the same with a dsquery you would use the following:

dsquery * “OU=someou, OU=someou, DC=domain, DC=domain” -attr Username -filter (Department=Sales)

Hello!!! Well I am not sure really what to put on the blog.

Not sure what will be added tbh, there will undoubtedly be scripts and links that I want to remember and have in one place. There may also be other meaningless topics that I put on here as well
